And in most cases, the free maps are much better than the expensive Garmin maps. In retrospect, I think the price for Garmin maps is too high. There are some as good, or better, alternatives available at no cost online. This product is overpriced for what it is. I would recommend other software. So let me start by saying there are a lot of ways to get free Garmin GPS maps, and a lot of different methods to install them.
You could create whole websites devoted to the subject, and people have see below. You can also create your own highly-customized maps and download them to your Garmin device. OpenStreetMaps are the Wikipedia of maps. The public contributes to, confirms, and edits the data on the map. This curation goes for hiking trails too. You can even become a contributor if you like. First off, the Garmin unit you have might have maps already. By spf , January 27, in GPS. I'm looking for free software to put on the PC that will let me put waypoints into the GPS and download saved information from the GPS to the computer. It works with all the legacy devices I'll give the Garmin Mapsource a try.
Also not sure what you mean by legacy devices. My GPS is one of the Garmin 'serial' units as pictured below:. I downloaded EasyGps and can't get it to work. Years ago, getting a serial to USB converter to work with the Etrex was always either a hit or a miss. Perhaps the OP can search these forums from 7 years ago or so and see what solution worked for certain people.
Also another factor is if you get it to work, the original Etrex only would accept 6 digits in the waypoint name, and most geocaches today are 7 digits. So if you got two caches like GC and GC, one will overwrite the other. It's just a lame analogy made by programmers. Mapsource is the former of them. What I call "legacy devices" would essentially be the pre stuff or so, which generally have a serial port instead of USB.
What version of windows are you running? In any case you probably need to load drivers for the cable for it to work. With the cable connected, are you seeing any "unknown devices" in the Windows device manager?
If not I have an FTDI cable myself and never had problems using it with garmin devices. Nevertheless drivers need to be loaded, no version of windows seems to have them integrated.
